The Problem

Users need a place to view an assortment of trailers which can aggregate to their many networks of streaming services while circumventing biased applications, while also sharing with others.

The Goal

The goal is to present users with a clear, honest view at options for users when streaming silos keep users from other options due to vested interests.

The Process

My Role & Responsibilities

The Users

Personas / Problem statements / User journey maps

To summarize, I believed that there was a gap in how users look for content online because streaming service’s only purpose is to serve their users. This results in “click holes” where a user scrolls through only the content of that service without considering what may be on another service they have. To aggregate that content is essential to optimizing a user and how they are entertained.

Pain Points

  • Users need to search and define what their needs are and help be educated in the process.

  • Users need to aggregate their options upfront, but also be shown new options they may not have known about.

  • Users should be able to share the experience with others and connect through the power of entertainment.

  • Users need to connect to their preferred streaming service quickly and efficiently.

User Persona

DARUIS

Age: 45
Education: Masters
Location: Norfolk, VA
Family: Married, 2 kids
Profession: Marketing

“How can I get info for an evening with my wife or take my kids something kid friendly?”

Goals

  • Create an app that details a good experience for kids or a date night

  • Easy to show, easy to share.

  • Get easy to access user ratings (IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes)

Frustrations

  • Vague descriptions and/or movies not optimized for needs.

  • Buried video access, easy search for new content splinter

  • Having to go to separate apps for rating

Darius is looking for something that allows him to view the appropriate movie for his young kids or wife out without doing a ton of research on separate sites and apps. How can he know what’s kid-friendly or great for a date night efficiently? Can he share a trailer with his wife for her feedback? Can he check out a movie trailer without a hard sell?

The User Journey

The Design

Wireframes / Low-fidelity Prototype / Usability Studies

Paper Wireframes

Usability Study

Round 2 Findings

  • Users want robust options

  • User want to jump to that program

  • Users want to send via text or email

Round 1 Findings

  • Users want clear search options

  • Users want clearly defined profiles

  • Users want easy & clear sharing

Refining the Design

Mockups / High-fidelity prototype / Accessibility

Converting to High Fidelity

Accessibility Considerations

  • High-contrast colors were used for maximum viewability.

  • Forms have descriptions above them for maximum understanding of input.

  • Multiple gestures were implemented to allow users more than one way to navigate the app.

Going Forward

Takeaways / Next Steeps

What I Learned
I learned that users can benefit from a custom way to aggregate information for their needs. This could be applied to a multitude of things outside of streaming, such as news or recipes.

Impact
The impact for users is simple, they save time and connect themselves with the most information available to make a choice for their streaming and entertainment pleasure.

Next Steps
If you were to scale this, you could apply it to different departments or add it to sites locally. You could work on adding admin privileges or dedicated users to moderate topics Messaging could be expanded and elaborated on.
